Dress for your shape: Christmas Edition

Each of us are beautifully unique, in looks, personality and shape. Because of this, we exclusively create pieces with our customer at the forefront of the design, developing garments that offer a comfortable fit as well as timeless style in premium quality fabrics that will truly last for years to come.  All our collections incorporate a range of styles, colours and fits to suit all tastes, preferences and shapes. But to help you choose the perfect pieces for you, we’ve put together this handy style guide.

The overarching rule for boosting confidence and flattering your figure, according to stylists is to achieve visual balance with your look. Depending on your body shape, this can be achieved by opting for slightly different tailoring, adding accessories or by wearing a piece that showcases features that attract the eye. There are five main categories to the ‘body shape’ guide, each have their own specific characteristics and you have probably come across them before: Apple, Pear, Column, Inverted triangle and Hourglass.

Simply dress these ensembles up for an occasion, or pair down for a considered casual look:

"Apple" shapes are usually defined by a rounded shoulder line, fullness around the tummy and shapely legs.
The pretty flared hem and cowlneck of this lightweight and comfortable jersey dress will distract the eye away from the mid-section of your body with ease. Plus, it’s a wonderful wardrobe addition that’s brilliant for everyday wear, while also being smart enough to dress up with a few accessories like our Owen Barry clutch bag for an event.

The "Column" figure is characterised by the top and bottom halves of the body being the same measurements with little waist definition.
Accentuate your physique in the gorgeous combination of our Italian cable knit rollneck and beautiful Italian check weave skirt. The attractive cable and rib front panel of the rollneck also subtly helps create the illusion of a waist.

"Pear" shapes tend to have a small upper half, with a defined waist but carry weight on the hips and thighs.
The beautiful sparkle and floral design of the gorgeous merino wool and lurex cardigan is perfect for drawing the eye upwards, while the comfortable classic trousers will elegantly showcase your petite waist. Dress down the ensemble with a plain white top underneath, or for a special occasion pair the outfit with the chic, shimmering Lurex-blend crewneck also made in a soft merino wool blend.

"Hourglass" statures are similar to Pear Shape but with a fuller bust.
Opt for detailing that showcases your petite waist, such as a tie or belt around a dress, skirt or trousers. Alternatively, choose a garment that’s tailored to cinch in the waist, like our gorgeous devoré dress which is styled with lavish pleating in the front panel and has a modesty neckpiece to ensure an elegant and glamourous look.

An "Inverted Triangle" body shape is identified by having a smaller bottom half than your top.
Create the illusion of fuller hips and thighs in our stunning checked pleated skirt, woven in a British heritage mill. The attractive tone reflects fireside colours of falling embers evoking feelings of warmth while the volume of the pleats will flatter your lower half and attract the eye downwards. Pair with a plain knitted warm top for an easy outfit perfect for both casual and occasion wear.

Dress for your shape with confidence, knowing that all of our clothes are expertly designed with you in mind. Made using natural fibres which hold their shape well and are more forgiving than their synthetic counterparts and in premium quality fabrics, our garments are guaranteed to give you a confidence boost for months ahead.

  2. Matching shape to style is a great idea! I love it! Might it be possible to add shape symbols ( there may be more than in some instances) alongside details in your catalogues? Might perhaps mean fewer returns. Most importantly - just keep producing your beautiful, quality clothes.

  3. As an 'inverted triangle' body shape I cannot understand why I would want to make my hips and waist fuller. I want a style that appears to reduce the size of my bust.

    1. Hi Pam, thank you for your comment. Wearing patterns, pleats and textures on your lower half creates the illusion of fuller hips, which will in turn create visual balance between your upper and lower half. We hope this helps. Best regards, The Cotswold Collections team.
