Jacquard fabric: what is it and why is it important?
What it is: Jacquard fabric features a raised pattern that is woven, rather than printed. It is durable and drapes well.
Where it all began: The inventor of the jacquard loom was Joseph Marie Jacquard (no prizes for guessing this), a French weaver and merchant, who tried his hand at various crafts, including book-binding and cutlery making before settling on weaving. He built upon and improved previous inventions to create the Jacquard loom, which uses cards with holes in them to create a pattern in the weave.
The V&A museum has a wonderful video that illustrates the method of a normal and Jacquard loom perfectly: http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/videos/j/video-jacquard-weaving/
Why it is important: Jacquard fabric not only looks and feels interesting, it also played a very important role in early computer science. The Jacquard loom inspired Charles Babbage who then went on to invent the first mechanical computer and in turn to collaborate with Ada Lovelace, another pioneer of early computing. Lovelace compares the jacquard loom to a computer: "We may say most aptly that the Analytical Engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.” The Jacquard loom may seem like a machine that creates garments of comparative insignificance and yet it underpins the entirety of our modern society.
