Inspiring Creative Women Series – Fay’s Studio

This is the second article in our new Creative Women Series, featuring inspiring women we work with when designing our collections. This month we will be introducing our partnership with Fay’s Studio. We are delighted to have been working in a partnership with Fay for three years to bring you a selection of lovely cards as part of our gifts collection. Join with us in supporting this local business by investing in their fabulous cards to give to your friends and loved ones.

Discover more about Fay’s Studio’s beautiful pieces and the story behind the brand.

Fay’s Studio was founded in 2009 by owner and wildlife illustrator Fay Miladowska. Fay grew up in rural Gloucestershire, near the banks of the River Severn and the Wetlands at Slimbridge, her interest of waterbirds, farm animals and other creatures began at an incredibly early age. Fay creates gorgeous high-quality hand-illustrated greeting cards, capturing her love of the planet’s flora and fauna. She uses the stunning pointillist technique which usually takes her three days to finish just one illustration before the colour is added. The procedure requires utilising different sized nibs ranging from 0.05 to 0.5mm using the pens to build up shape, form and texture which gives the illustrations a 3D effect. All cards are designed and made in the UK, from her studio based in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

At the age of 25, Fay was struggling to manage her existing job because of the complications of living with chronic illness. She began her new journey by applying her BA Honours degree in Illustration from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth and completing The Prince's Trust Business Enterprise Programme and established her Illustration Studio and launched her own business. Fay has been using pen and ink techniques for 20 years and has worked with brands such as Hallmark, Liberty, English Heritage, Highgrove and her cards have been showcased in the windows at Harrods. Fay’s Studio has also been featured in many popular publications including Hello!, The English Home Magazine and Daily Mail. Fay has sold her greeting cards all over the world from the UK to Japan, Germany, Lithuania, Norway, France, Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia.

We wanted to know more about Fay’s Studio, so we asked Fay about the inspiration behind her designs.

I find my inspiration from long walks taken with my dog, Sidney, and often return home to my studio with a plethora of ideas ready to put onto paper. I can be working on Winter or Summer designs at any given time, I gradually build up my range often through suggestions from customers or trends which are breaking through.

Over the past decade, I have worked with dream clients on many special orders and commissions. My first milestone came just 3 months after launch when Paperchase placed their first order. I never could have imagined that I would one day see my illustrations on the shelves of so many well-known retailers in the UK and overseas and find myself quite so busy and fortunate to love a job which was created out of a very challenging time.

Fay’s Studio Collection

Discover our beautiful selection of bespoke boxes of cards designed by Fay’s Studio over the last three years as part of our Christmas gift collections below. The stunning cards are made and printed with environmentally friendly materials. In 2018, we began our partnership with Fay’s Studio with the release of delightful bird illustrations.

With great success from the first release, last year we launched the magical illustrations of hedgerow creatures including the Hare, Pheasant, Fox and Badger in a beautiful British Wildlife box pack.

This year, we launched the enchanting illustrations of garden flowers and insects including dragonfly, poppies, ladybird and bee designs.

Fay says “It’s lovely to know customers respond well to something you put your everything into”.

How is Christmas different this year for you?

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to put up the Christmas tree and prepare for the festive season with our yearly traditions. We have asked everyone around the office to let us in on their favourite traditions or if they will be starting new ones this year. There is no doubt Christmas will look different this year, but we can still make it full of love and joy. Whether it’s decorating our houses early, spreading festive cheer while attending virtual carol singing or watching a pantomime in a drive-in show. However, you’re celebrating Christmas, let us inspire you with our new and old traditions. If you’re spending Christmas alone, discover our ideas to help you through the day and bring some joy.

As the normal Christmas lights turn on gatherings haven’t been able to happen as usual this year, my local village decided to take a bit of a different approach, ensuring the Christmas spirit was still going strong. Instead of our usual gathering and countdown for the lights around the town clock tower, word spread that for the last Friday before December we were going to have our very own Christmas lights turn on, but in a much more personal and safe way. Everyone decorated their houses and gardens with lots of Christmas lights and at 6 pm on the last Friday before December we all went to our gardens for our very own count down and Christmas light turn on! It’s fair to say the streets have never looked brighter!

This year, a lot of us are cooking and baking at home more than ever. I have learnt new recipes such as healthy cookies, Victorian sponge cake, carrot cake, blueberry loaf and lemon drizzle. I want to continue my baking journey at home, I’m thinking of starting a new tradition with the family by baking this Christmas. Baking brings comfort and creates beautiful memories with the family. I will be connecting with loved ones and spreading the Christmas cheer by sharing those tasty photos with them. We usually watch Christmas movies from mid-December, but we have decided we will be watching Christmas movies every night until Christmas day.

It's been a really tough year for everyone, and we've all had different experiences to deal with, so remember to be gentle with yourselves and each other and grateful for the “comfort and Joy” we still have around us. As a family we’ll be welcoming back our son from his first term at University. It’ll be a quiet Christmas in our own home which is unusual as we have a very big extended family, however we are as a group going to attempt a “Christmas meal on Zoom” from our dining rooms which should be interesting to see how that goes but still some traditions we will be able to continue such as chats around our roaring fire, leaving a drop of Brandy, mince pies and carrots out for Father Christmas and the Reindeers and also reading “The night before Christmas” together, no matter how old the kids get they still ask to do this.”

All “Father Christmas” shopping is being done from the comfort and safety of home online and I don’t know about you but it’s quite nice shopping this way and popping gifts into the baskets and editing them. Although we won’t be attending church for the usual Christingle and Christmas eve services, we will be joining in online so although not altogether under “one roof” we can still give thanks for what we do have and look forward to 2021 with positivity and hope.

One of our favourite traditions is to watch the pantomime as a family. We were very happy when we found out that we are still able to watch the pantomime this year from the comfort of our car at a drive-in show. This will definitely bring joy into our family just before Christmas, especially after the year we’ve all had. With all the Christmas light switch on’s being cancelled, we have been enjoying our drives, looking at the colourful lit-up houses in our neighbourhood’s magical light displays.

One of our family traditions is to have a lovely walk out in the countryside all wrapped up and weather permitting, to help burn off some of those extra calories we consume. This year, we hope to share this with our extended family, staying outdoors where it is safer and take the opportunity to exchange presents at the same time and maybe share a hot toddy! Although we will walk mostly through fields, I hope we will also pass through the local village to see the Christmas decorations and lights that our neighbours have put up and give them all a wave, wishing them Merry Christmas.

How to look after your well-being if you are alone on Christmas

If you're spending Christmas alone or not in the spirit to celebrate, you’re not alone. This year, many of us will be celebrating Christmas without family or friends, whether by choice or circumstance, it’s important to remember to be kind to yourself. We have put together a few ideas which may help you to look after yourself all day.

Stay connected with others as maintaining healthy relationships with people is important for your well-being. If you cannot meet up with your friends and family, you can arrange phone calls or make plans to video chat instead to stay in touch. If your home feels too quiet, put the radio on and listen to cheerful Christmas music or a podcast. Plan your day around with a list of some well-being activities such as reading, writing, colouring or completing a Christmas puzzle. During the evening, get the fire roaring, dim the lights, and throw on a festive movie to watch from your couch.

Why not indulge in a little ‘me time’ and pamper yourself. Enjoy an indulgent spa-style experience at home with our luxury soap including shea butter and lavender oil. Set the mood and help your mind unwind with our lavender diffuser with long-lasting fragrance. Treat yourself to a pampering skin routine with our beautiful gift set containing a hand wash and lotion in a nourishing blend of cocoa butter, sweet almond oil and lavender. Our slumber gift set includes a spray, gel for pulse points, luxury soap and lavender bag for your pillow that will help you relax and wake up feeling fresh.

We wish you a delightful Christmas that’s merry and bright. What are your favourite Christmas traditions? Let us know in the comments below…

Inspiring Creative Women Series – Laura Stoddart

Welcome to our new Creative Women Series, where we will be featuring inspiring women we work with when designing our collections. In the first of our new series, we will be introducing our partnership with Laura Stoddart. We are thrilled to be offering you a selection of gorgeous pieces from Laura as part of our Christmas gift collection. Join with us in supporting this local business by investing in our stunning pieces from our gift range to give to your friends and loved ones.

Connect with us to explore Laura Stoddart’s beautiful pieces and the story behind the brand we have been working with for four years.

Laura Stoddart is an award-winning British illustrator, creator and designer, who grew up in rural Cheshire. She always aspired to be an illustrator and started her studies at Brighton University and then the Royal College of Art. Laura’s career path developed from designing a collection of the 1996 Christmas stamps for Royal Mail and is known to be the youngest professional artist to have ever designed a set. She has also worked for brands such as Crabtree & Evelyn, Unicef, Gardens Illustrated and Portmeirion.

With her broad knowledge in design and illustration, Laura launched her own collection of home, stationery and giftware in 2016. Laura’s lovely illustrations are also revealed in her unique cards and art prints. These wonderful products are entirely designed and made in England using the finest sustainable materials including compostable biofilms and FSC paper. Laura beautifully represents nature through her stunning creations and takes part in her favourite event of the year, RHS Chelsea Flower Show, to display her artwork with this year, shown virtually.

We wanted to know more about her brand, so we asked Laura a few questions below.

What inspires you with your designs?

In no particular order, my home and garden, early botanical illustration, interiors magazines, Vogue, my mother, Early Renaissance paintings, collections of objects, photographs from the thirties and forties, nature.

What inspired you to start Laura Stoddart?

I had a break from being a free-lance illustrator to have my two children and when I returned I decided that I needed more creative control over my work and because I had less time and I paint slowly each piece of work needed to work quite hard. Having produced cards, paper products and china for other companies, it seemed like a good place to start. Little did I realise what starting and running your own business entailed! I have learnt a lot about my strengths and weaknesses and after five years am finally in the very wonderful position of working with a fabulous team of girls who enable me to do what I do best.

A little background about you?

I was born in Liverpool and grew up in rural Cheshire. I am a third-generation illustrator, my mother and great-aunt were both illustrators before me. I studied at Brighton University and the Royal College of Art. My first commission was Christmas stamps for the Royal Mail. I have been very lucky in my career and have thoroughly enjoyed working for companies and organisations such as Gardens Illustrated, Crabtree and Evelyn, the National Trust, Roger la Borde, Kate Spade, Portmerion, Hester and Cook and Unicef. I have lived and worked on the Somerset Devon borders for the past thirteen years. I am married to an artist called Jonathan Delafield Cook and I am the very proud owner of two Bedlington Terriers.
