Seasonal Essentials

New Year, New Season, New Patterns!

Look forward to the New Year and revamp your wardrobe with the bright contemporary prints in our Early Spring 2020 collection!

Patterns have been a staple part of fashion history, in East Asia the earliest surviving example of Woodblock printing dates back to 220AD. Then in 1860 William Jennings Demorest and Ellen Louise Demorest revolutionised the industry by introducing sewing patterns. Over the years there have been many revivals of the ‘classic’ prints and they have certainly sustained their popularity throughout each decade.

This year is no exception to the trend, and we’re looking forward to bringing you key pieces, thoughtfully created by our designers in the heart of the Cotswold’s and styled to suit you…

Showcasing a fabulously modern geometric floral print, these gorgeous jersey separates look beautiful paired together and can be effortlessly coordinated with pieces from your existing wardrobe.

The classic polka dot motif has been refashioned on this intriguing French soft blouse, perfect for all occasion wear as well as a layering piece over a t-shirt. It also looks stunning with the complementing silk and cotton scarf, printed for us in England.

Florals are always wonderfully feminine, and we have a lovely selection in our latest collection. For a lighter piece to wear throughout the season into summer and beyond, take a look at our soft, warm blouse featuring a charming French botanical print. Add a stylish layer to your ensembles with our luxuriously warm jacquard cardigan which showcases an eye-catching floral design in a bright spring hue.

Chic and luxurious, our fully fashioned mélange jumper has a feature front panel of jacquard knit in three lovely colours creating a wonderful stripe effect pattern.

Transition towards Spring with ease with our latest arrivals

Our lightweight insulating layers, natural fibres and attractive textures are all designed in easy, comfortable wear-me-now styles, perfect for easing the process of transitioning through the season change.

Keep warm on those chiller days of the season in cosy, warming pieces like our pure lambswool cardigan, knitted in the softest machine washable yarn in a glorious blue shade and styled with a lovely chevon stitch fashioning.

Be prepared for unpredictable weather changes in our practical and stylish coats, perfect for protecting you against the elements while being light enough to carry or pack if needed. Our reversible insulated down coat is brilliantly versatile with the two options for wear and is quilted for excellent warmth.

Glorious, bright, spring inspired tones feature throughout the collection in a range of styles and will instantly transcend your look into Spring. Made in pure wool woven in a British heritage fabric, our gorgeous lovat hue tweed jacket has a subtle check weave and is a lovely, uplifting finishing layer.

Beautiful feminine florals have been a staple in spring/summer fashion for a while now and this year we have refashioned these favourites. Our delightful Italian print chiffon skirt showcases a stunning hydrangea design in eye-catching tones of green and blue. The unique, almost geometric pattern of our floral jersey separates is a lovely alternative to the classic design and can be worn together for a pretty ensemble or paired with plains from your existing wardrobe.

Top tips for a restorative night’s sleep

As wonderful as Christmas can be, it can also be a very busy and at times a stressful time of the year. Make sure you’re sleeping well to make the most of all the festivities with our five top tips for a restful night's slumber…

1 – Make sure you wind down
Create a peaceful routine to help your mind and body wind down for bed. Taking a warm (not hot) bath or shower can aid this process by naturally encouraging your body to reduce its temperature. Follow with a pampering skin routine, applying a kind to sensitive skin cream such as our lavender and geranium lotion which is as luxurious as it is calming with its beautiful fragrance. Many experts also recommend reading before bed as a welcomed break away from the television, especially as technology emits an unnatural disruptive blue light. Also, spritzing a relaxing pillow spray, like our camomile slumber spray before you get into bed can also encourage relaxation.

2 – Ensure your bedroom is sleep friendly
Design a sleeping environment that encourages some much needed shut-eye by excluding disruptive external factors such as light or noise. Black-out blinds or curtains, ear plugs and an eye-mask can simply ease this process, along with introducing a calming subtle scent such as lavender to benefit your sleep cycle. Our brand-new room diffuser is fragranced with essential oils of lavender and geranium, believed to promote relaxation and harmony.

3 – Optimise the best temperature
When it’s too warm or too cold you can struggle to sleep as your bedroom should be around 20°C in temperature, and you should feel cosy and comfortable. The importance of being the right temperature has been proven by sleep studies which have shown that it can affect sleep quality more than external noise. If you’re susceptible to cold feet at night, try a pair of our superb soft and warming cashmere bed socks. The right bedwear can also help, opt for something breathable and comfortable like our Austrian cotton interlock jersey nightwear.

4 – Try to avoid caffeine at least 6 hours before bed
Whether coffee or tea, caffeine stimulates your nervous system and may stop your body from naturally relaxing at night. If you do crave a hot drink, opt for a decaffeinated coffee or tea. Maybe even try something natural like camomile or fruit teas which can sometimes aid better sleep quality.

5 – Eat well throughout the day, but especially at dinner time
Having a large stodgy meal can impede sleep and certain foods can keep you awake too, if consumed late in the day. Spicy, high in sugar and acidic foods are difficult to digest and may cause uncomfortable indigestion. However, eating rice, oats and dairy products can actually produce chemicals that increase our desire to sleep.

    Pretty pleats:
Pleats have remained a staple wardrobe piece for many years and their popularity with Cotswold Collections as well as our customers have not wavered.

Through the strong partnership we share with our British heritage mills and by popular demand, our latest introduction is our stunning hyacinth checked pleat skirt.

    Pastel colours:
Pastels are always a popular trend, especially in Spring and Summer. Though this year, a new shade will be in the spotlight: sage green.  Take a look at our stunning offering in this beautiful hue.

    Natural fabrics:
Through the last few years awareness of sustainability, plastic pollution and global warming has grown. During 2018 the fashion industry also saw this change occurring with recycled, au-natural fabrics taking to the catwalks. This trend is sure to continue through 2019 and the coming years.

In early 2018, here at Cotswold Collections we began removing the plastic wrapping from all our catalogues. Continuing to do our part for the environment, this year we have included ecologically sound fabric that has been made from recycled plastic bottles and cotton.

Top Tips for a Restful Night's Sleep

Getting a good night's sleep is becoming harder and harder with technology and artificial lighting disrupting our natural body rhythms, so we've compiled the best tips for making sure you get in those crucial eight hours.

    Tech Time-Out

Firstly, put away laptops, tablets and smartphones at least 2 hours before bed. They emit lots of blue light, which prevents melatonin production (the sleep hormone) and tricks your body into thinking it's still daytime. Instead, read a book or listen to something calming on the radio and you'll be well on your way to restful night's sleep.

    Wind Down

Whilst you are reading your book, sip our relaxing Cotswold Lavender tea with a little honey to taste. Lavender is well known for its relaxing and soothing properties which promote sleep, whilst honey contains orexin, which regulates wakefulness, helping you to relax and unwind.

Wearing good quality nightwear made from pure cotton allows your body temperature to be easily regulated, keeping you warm and comfortable for a better night's sleep. The same applies to bed linen. Our soft and comfortable nightdress is made from brushed cotton and features luxurious touches of lace. Our cosy fleece dressing gown also has a soft brushed finish and has a tassel on the zip pull for easy fastening. The suede slippers have soft, sheepskin interiors and textured non-slip soles for a very cosy night in.

    Get Cosy

Staying warm is key but not too warm, which can also disrupt your sleep - your bedroom should be around 18C but it's not always possible to maintain this, especially in older houses so wrapping up is a wonderful way to guarantee a restful night's sleep. These cashmere bed socks are delightfully soft and warm and accompanied with our Liberty of London print hot water bottle to warm the bed before you go to sleep, you can be sure of a great night's sleep! Keeping your feet warm, where circulation is poor, maintaining a good body temperature.

    Have A Bath

Having a bath before bed regulates your body temperature and relaxes your muscles, which are conducive a better night's sleep. Pouring Epsom Salts into your bath also aids relaxation as they contain magnesium which we use a lot of especially when we are stressed so replenishing it is a must (please consult your doctor if you suffer from any health conditions before using Epsom Salts)!

Wrap up in our printed fleece dressing gown after your bath, gently mist your pillow with our Cotswold Lavender slumber spray and don the beautiful Liberty of London print eye mask, which keeps out any artificial light that will interrupt your sleep cycle.

    Keep Your Feet Warm

Studies suggest that having cold feet during the day and especially before bed, can inhibit melatonin production, keeping you awake, cold and uncomfortable. So to remedy this take a look at our other super comfortable slippers. Whether you prefer the suede moccasins or the boot slipper both have non-slip soles and sheepskin fur on the inside.

To nap or not to nap?

Research suggests that long naps disrupt your sleep cycle but apparently naps of up to 30 minutes can help alertness later in the day.

What you can do in the day to help:

    • Stick a routine: try to sleep and then rise at the roughly the same time every day.
    • Eat breakfast - eating within half an hour of rising regulates melatonin production, ensuring a better night's sleep.
    • Stay active - take a 30-minute walk during the day or more if you feel up to it.
    • Spend time outdoors in natural light but if this is not easily achievable sit by a window or near bright indoor lighting.
    • Don't drink caffeinated drinks after 3pm. Some studies say to avoid caffeine after midday as the body can take up to ten hours to metabolise it.
    • Limiting your exposure to bright lights after the sun sets (except during these longer evenings) will help you fall asleep more easily.
    • A light supper and then a snack before bed of these sleep-inducing foods: turkey, warm milk, honey, marmite, almonds, camomile, oatcakes and bananas.

    Fashion Trends for Winter 2017

What are the key fashion trends for Winter 2017 and how can you integrate them into your existing wardrobe? We're highlighting the top trends for this season, from traditional checks to sparkly lurex pieces and how to wear them!

Checks are back in a big way! From large, overstated pieces (see our bouclé coat) to subtler Prince of Wales and dogtooth checks. They are versatile and easy to wear, making any outfit timeless.

Faux fur can be seen on the catwalks this season from full-length coats to accessories; we prefer a more understated look, worn as a detachable collar on this tweed coat for a touch of glamour.

Corduroy is set to take centre stage over the coming seasons (we have that straight from Jane, our Managing Director) and so it's come as no surprise that our new needlecord dress is already flying off the shelves!

Winter equals knitwear and especially this year when more traditional jumpers and cardigans are on-trend. Time to dig out your old favourites and splurge on that new you one you've been eyeing up, like our Fairisle cardigan, which has been expertly knitted in Scotland.

Silk scarves are everywhere this season and we couldn't be happier! Our local mill, Beckford Silk, will certainly be kept busy over the coming months printing all of our beautiful designs onto their luxurious fabric.

Just because it's winter doesn't mean that flowers aren't on the catwalk; they are big, bold and here to stay! Our exclusive Binda print skirt looks lovely with the soft cashmere-blend jumper.

Wrap up warm with our large selection of wraps and serapes this season. A simple layer that is easy to wear and very stylish and what's more it's on all the catwalks.

Winter doesn't have to be dull - sparkle and shine are a huge part of the catwalks this season. We prefer an understated take on this trend with our lurex top and sparkle tweed skirt (with matching jacket).

Finally double-breasted jackets are here to stay! Our check jacket is made from pure wool woven in a British heritage mill.

Which fashion trends will you be introducing to your wardrobe this season? We'd love to hear from you! Let us know by leaving a comment using the box below.
